Definition of Mascara-  
In the Cosmetics the word Mascara means to enhance eyes. It define the eye lashes through may darken, thicken, or/ and lengthen. According to English Dictionary Mascara defines as darkening, Curling, Coloring & thickening eye lashes. In 18 century Mascara or water cosmetique were used for darkening eye brow without greasing them and made them prominent.

Those century mascara were define as a one kind of painting which used to paint the eye brow & eye lashes of women. To darken eyelashes, paint mascara or black paint with a small brush.

Little History-

Ancient Egypt from around 4000BC mascara refers as substance called Kohl. That use to darken eye lashes and eye brow. But there was difference Kohl was used to mask the eyes districting off evil spirits and protecting the soul by both men & women.

Kohl Composition- Galena, Malachite, Charcoal or soot, Crocodile stool, Honey and Water.

After nineteen century mascara recognize and developed. It developed through petroleum jelly and coal in a set ratio. The brush which was dampened rubbed against a cake containing soap and black dye in equal proportions then applied to the lashes.

In the Fashion World Mascara was achieving popularity with in very short time & so fast. Just after First World War two American companies launched their own products including Mascara. In this way Mascara expanded favors & respect in American society. Due to photography & motion picture especially the picture to show the standard of beauty with sex appeal. For the glamorous appearance the celebrity was heavily dependent upon Mascara.

 

 

EyeLashes- 

A woman in 1933 permanently dyed her eyelashes. For this she was use paraphenylenediamine. This chemical is extremely toxic to the body as dyeing agent. At that time cosmetics was not regulated by the Food & Drugs Administration. So the danger of paraphenylenediamine was unknown. There was some kind of product also which made people blind. After that in 1938 Congress granted the FDA the right to regulate the cosmetics.

Years later Mascara formula was evaluated and from a hard cake into a lotion based cream. The new formulation mascara was packed in a tube with a brush. To applied the cream was squeezed onto the brush and adds to lashes. As through this it was steps towards the modern mascara product. A groove rod was invented and the device picked the same amount of mascara for each use. For the grooved rod the use of mascara become easier to applicator & popular ones to use today.
Candle maker William Procter & soap maker James Gamble (P&G) developed a ‘’Moldtrusion Brush’’ in 2005.A Mascara wand used bristle made of thermoplastic instead of nylon. Lash Perfection was the first mascara marketed to use this brush & launched by Max Factor.


Ingredients- 
Most of the Mascara’s containing pigments, oils. Waxes and preservatives. In spite of these the demand of Mascara increased in the current markets and led to the development of many formulas.
The pigmentation was use by the Egyptian and Victorian women are quite similar to the pigmentation for black mascara in now days.
Moldtrusion Mascara Brush
 Carbon Black (material produce by the incomplete combustion of heavy petroleum) instead of soot or ash is used. Tar and Coal derivatives are strictly prohibited by the FDA.
Iron Oxide is used to make typical Brown Mascaras though the specific compounds are unique to each brand. The additional pigments Ultramarine is used is some cases.


Guano Controversy- Guano or Guanine!!! It’s little bit confusing. Spanish word Guano means ‘’dung’’ & widely used in the cosmetics. Function as colorant and as an opacifying means lightening or shimmering agent. Mascara contains the crystalline form of guanine. Extract from the fish scales, sea bird or bats, has phosphorous & nitrogen rich elements. This additive is approved by the FDA & European regulations.
There is a great deal more leeway and variety among the oils used. Different mineral oils Linseed oil, Castor oil, Eucalyptus oil, Lanolin oil of turpentine is found in many of formulas. One more Sesame oils are also used.  Waxes are also widely found in mascaras such as- Paraffin, Carnauba wax, Beeswax. The most desirable formulas of mascaras are considered whether the mascara will be water resistant or not. The formulation of water resistant mascara is based on rebuff the water like Dodecane. Non water resistant mascaras have water soluble ingredients.
Do not pump your mascara as it will get air in it & dry out quickly- Mind It . . .
